Too many challenges for container terminals
Drewry Shipping Consultants sees “more challenges and less opportunities” for the container terminal industry going forward.
Senior consultant, Tina Liu, told delegates at Navis World that she “struggles” to find opportunities, singling out the challenges presented by container line alliances as a root cause of many of the present day challenges. “Terminal capacity has not adjusted to the new world of alliances,” she said, which has led to terminals subsiding the upsizing of containerships.
“It is unbelievable how terminals keep accepting these larger ships,” she said. “Alliances are one of the worst way to collaborate from an economist’s point of view, but there are no other options but to collaborate. “The question is are shipping lines willing to pay far terminal infrastructure/equipment requirements? They are not.”
